A great event is starting today in Juneau. The biennial Celebration event will be held June 5th-7th and is a weekend festival which includes members of the Tlingit, Haida and Tsimshian tribal members. The 2008 theme is Tlingit, Haida, Tsimshian: Dancing on the Land.

The weekend activities include dance performances, a juried art show, parade, Native Artist Market and more! Some of the events are free, while others do have a minimal charge to cover the cost of the activities. According to the Sealaska Heritage website, a weekend pass for adults is $25.00 and a senior/child’s pass is $12.00. You can also purchase a daily pass for $10.00 per adult and $5.00 for seniors and children.

I have attended the 2004 and 2006 Celebration and it was truly a wonderful event. I enjoyed seeing family and friends, learning more about my husband’s heritage and learned so much more about the peoples of Southeast Alaska. It really is a celebration of the people, cultures, art, and music, just to name a few.

Here is the event schedule for the weekend of June 5th-7th. You can get accurate times and locations by viewing the Sealaska Heritage website at www.sealaskaheritage.org. Enjoy this special event which comes to Juneau every other year!
