It is a perfect day in Juneau for…rain! Yep, it’s raining again and I’m starting to wonder when summer will actually be here. It’s starting to get a bit depressing, but I try to remind myself that the reason Juneau is so green is because of the rain. It will get warmer and the sun will eventually come out!

Because it is raining again I am struggling to find things to do other than staying cooped up in my house. I have to admit I prefer the warmth of the heater over the soggy, wet feeling you get when outside. So, today I made the decision to check out the local fish hatchery. It has been a few years since I have been here, and it is a pretty popular stop on the cruise line itinerary, so I figured it would be worth a visit.

DIPAC is the acronym for Douglas Island Pink and Chum and it is a salmon hatchery located right in the heart of Juneau. Locals refer to the operation at DIPAC, whereas, the tourists know it better as Macaulay Salmon Hatchery.

A visit to DIPAC is a great experience. Those interested in fish will enjoy the educational commentaries and information throughout the building. There are multiple displays throughout the building featuring interesting facts & information about salmon.

Those with children will love the aquarium. Inside of the building there is an aquarium featuring many types of fish and salmon. I’ll admit, I’m not an expert at identifying the different types of fish, so my pictures are usually just labeled as “fish” and awaiting my husband’s expertise on the subject. It is great to have the chance to learn about salmon as they are a very important part of the Alaska economy and food system. There is also a small gift shop called “the salmon shop” indoors and features souvenirs and memorabilia. All proceeds from the shop actually benefit education and programs at the facility, so your money spent is towards a very good cause.

The cost is $3.25 for adults and $1.75 for children. DIPAC is located at 2697 Channel drive. It is a very convenient location between the Valley and downtown and is across from the hospital. It is very simple to find, and if you have never been here before, you will have no problem finding the location.
