Mendenhall Glacier: A Nice Drive or Hike!

How many places can claim that they have a glacier in their city limits, easy accessible for all to enjoy? Juneau, of course. Mendenhall Glacier is located in the Valley and is approximately 12 miles from Downtown Juneau. It is a recreational area favored by locals. There are opportunities to take photographs, hike paved trails, view wildlife and take in the natural beauty. For some, this is even a location to soak up in the chilly waters on a hot summer day…I haven’t been crazy enough to swim in the waters yet!

I spend quite a bit of time out at the glacier. It seems like in moments of boredom we decide to take a drive and it always ends up we head to the glacier. What I like best about the glacier is the close proximity to any location in Juneau. There is a Visitors Center which is open year round and has great informational resources to learn about the glacier, Juneau Icefield and wildlife that inhabit this location. The Visitor Center offers children’s programs on Saturday mornings during the year, although times vary and you should check the local newspaper or visitors center website for updated information.

The glacier is part of the Juneau Icefield, and towers nearly 100 feet above Mendenhall Lake. The lake has depths of nearly 200 feet and is a popular area for water recreation in addition to the number of hikes and land activities that are available.
Most people take the opportunity to visit the glacier during the summer months, but being residents in Juneau we are fortunate to have the special occasion of seeing the glacier during winter when the ice peaks are covered with thick layers of snow and the lake is frozen over. Winter is a time when residents bring out their cross country skis and snowshoes and are able to get up close and personal to the glacier. It is important to remember, however, that the glacier still calves and pieces break off and it is critical that you follow all rules and posted warnings regarding the glacier.

I have posted a few pictures of the glacier during the summer and winter. Although different, both are amazing times to visit and experience this outdoor playground that is so easy to get to from any location in Juneau. From Egan Drive, turn onto Mendenhall Loop Road. Follow this road for approximately 2-3 miles and it will lead you directly to the park and Visitor Center. It is open year round from sunup to sundown. One of the best features about taking a drive or hiking at the glacier…it’s free and easy for all to enjoy!
