Juneau: Alaska’s Capital & Government Hub

Juneau is the capital of Alaska. Although there is much debate throughout the state about the capital being located in a remote location, Juneau is a wonderful city with residents who are very interested in local, state and national politics.

Being the capital city, Juneau houses a number of government offices, including the capitol building. The capitol building in Juneau is one of two in the U.S. which do not have the traditional dome top. I had an opportunity to tour the capitol building which provided insight into the government of Alaska. Read the rest of Juneau: Alaska’s Capital & Government Hub »

Cope Park

Cope Park is a lovely location near downtown Juneau between Capital and Calhoun Streets. Gold creek runs through the park and provides opportunities for spotting wildlife. Cope Park provides a bit of Juneau history as it winds along Gold Creek, which is the creek where Joseph Juneau and Richard Harris found gold.

The park has a variety of structures and includes a play area with swings and options for kids to interact. There are tennis courts and a softball field where activity can be seen throughout the year, but especially during the spring and summer months. Read the rest of Cope Park »

DIPAC Fish Hatchery

It is a perfect day in Juneau for…rain! Yep, it’s raining again and I’m starting to wonder when summer will actually be here. It’s starting to get a bit depressing, but I try to remind myself that the reason Juneau is so green is because of the rain. It will get warmer and the sun will eventually come out!

Because it is raining again I am struggling to find things to do other than staying cooped up in my house. I have to admit I prefer the warmth of the heater over the soggy, wet feeling you get when outside. Read the rest of DIPAC Fish Hatchery »

Enjoy a slower pace, head over to Gustavus

For those looking to get away from Juneau for a day or weekend, Gustavus is a great little community with a lot of friendly locals, great beaches and excellent inns.

In order to visit Gustavus you will have to take a boat or plane. A plane ride on one of the small air taxis which operate out of the Juneau airport will take you approximately 20-30 minutes each way. It’s a pretty quick flight, and very scenic! The boat will take about 2 ½ hours and is a great opportunity to catch a glimpse of whales and other wildlife. Read the rest of Enjoy a slower pace, head over to Gustavus »

Rain or Shine Juneau Has Plenty to Offer

Rainy days are common in Juneau, or rather I should say, sunny days are not common in Juneau. However, anytime the sun is shining in this town it reminds me of why I live here. There is no place as beautiful as Juneau. As a parent I know that rainy days can be cause for a crazy house. Kids are running around screaming or they sit around and complain of boredom throughout the day. Why not get kids out of the house rain or shine to enjoy Juneau? Alaska State Museum

Rainy days are common in Juneau. As a parent it is sometimes very difficult to find activities for children when the weather outside is not at it’s best. I know from experience that children locked inside the house for any given period of time can lead to ornery children…who can blame them, they have so much energy! Mendenhall Glacier: A Nice Drive or Hike!

Mendenhall Glacier during the winter monthsHow many places can claim that they have a glacier in their city limits, easy accessible for all to enjoy? Juneau, of course. Mendenhall Glacier is located in the Valley and is approximately 12 miles from Downtown Juneau. It is a recreational area favored by locals. There are opportunities to take photographs, hike paved trails, view wildlife and take in the natural beauty. For some, this is even a location to soak up in the chilly waters on a hot summer day…I haven’t been crazy enough to swim in the waters yet!
